A Trusted Method That Stands the Test of Time

Auctions have long been one of the most transparent and efficient ways to determine market value. Whether it’s art, property, or business assets, the auction process allows open competition, quick turnaround, and fair value for both buyers and sellers.

At JPS, we’re proud to continue this tradition, blending decades of experience in valuation and auctioneering. We use modern technology that connects buyers and sellers across the UK and beyond.

Our story, and that of the wider auction industry, is one of evolution, innovation, and trust.

From Candle Auctions to Commercial Sales

Modern auctions as we know them took shape in the 17th and 18th centuries. English merchants began using “candle auctions” to ensure fair competition. The last bid before the candle’s flame went out would win.

Over time, this simple method developed into a more structured, professional auction model. By the 19th and 20th centuries, auctions were an established part of economic life, a respected mechanism for trading everything from fine arts to ships, land, and industrial machinery.

That same spirit of transparency and competition underpins today’s business asset auctions, a key area where JPS has built a strong reputation.

The Industrial Age and the Birth of Business Asset Auctions

The Industrial Revolution transformed how goods were produced and traded. Businesses invested heavily in machinery, vehicles, and equipment. With this came the need for asset valuation, disposal, and reallocation.

As industries grew, merged, or faced financial restructuring, auctions became the preferred method for turning business assets into cash quickly and efficiently. By the early 20th century, specialist auctioneers and valuers had emerged, providing accurate appraisals and professional sales for factories, workshops, and transport fleets.

These roots laid the foundation for the modern commercial auction sector, and for the expertise that JPS continues to uphold today.

The JPS Story: Five Generations of Auctioneering Excellence

While JPS Chartered Surveyors was formally established in 2004, our auctioneering heritage runs much deeper. Our directors, Mike and Mark, are fourth-generation auctioneers, carrying forward a family tradition that dates back to the 1940’s, initially started by great-grandfather Mick, followed by Grandpa Joe, mother Bobbie and now Mike and Mark. Daniel, Mike’s son is the next generation now working for JPS.

That continuity gives JPS a unique perspective on the auction industry’s evolution, from traditional salesrooms filled with bidders and auction catalogues, to today’s online bidding platforms where buyers participate from across the world.

The Digital Transformation: Auctions Go Online

The past two decades have seen the most significant shift in the auction industry since its inception: the move online. What was once a local or regional event is now a global marketplace.

At JPS Chartered Surveyors, all our auctions are now conducted online, allowing buyers from across the UK and overseas to participate in real time. This digital transformation offers clear advantages:

  • Broader Reach: Thousands of bidders can access each sale.
  • Speed and Efficiency: Online auctions allow faster turnaround times.
  • Transparency and Accessibility: Clients can monitor profess and bidders can engage wherever they are.

Technology has made the process more efficient, but the principles remain the same: integrity, accuracy, and trust.

Auctions and Insolvency: Realising Value Responsibly

In today’s business landscape, auctions remain a vital tool for us to service the needs of insolvency practitioners, lending institutions, directors or private vendors. When businesses face restructuring or closure, a well-managed auction can provide the most transparent and effective way to realise asset value.

Our team at JPS understands the sensitivities and timescales involved. We combine precise valuation with efficient asset management to ensure fair outcomes for creditors and stakeholders. Whether it’s a full clearance, vehicle fleet, or retail stock, our professional process is designed to deliver value quickly and responsibly.

Why Business Asset Auctions Still Matter

Even in a digital age, the principles behind auctions have never been more relevant.
They provide:

  • Speed: Converting assets to cash quickly and efficiently.
  • Fair Market Value: Real-time competition ensures assets achieve their true worth.
  • Transparency: Open, accountable sales trusted by professionals and buyers alike.

Auctions are also an ethical and sustainable way to manage business assets. By extending the life of machinery, vehicles, and equipment, they help reduce waste and support the circular economy, ensuring valuable resources are reused rather than scrapped. Every item sold through an auction finds a new purpose, creating economic value while reducing environmental impact.

For businesses, lenders, and insolvency practitioners, auctions remain one of the most effective ways to manage change and recover value. For buyers, they’re an exciting opportunity to access quality equipment and assets at market-led prices.

At JPS, we’re proud to uphold these values while continuing to innovate for the modern marketplace.

Continuing a Proud Tradition

From the days of candle auctions to the digital platforms of today, the auction process has evolved, but its purpose remains the same: to bring buyers and sellers together through fair competition and trust.

At JPS Chartered Surveyors, we continue that tradition every day, providing expert valuations, professional guidance, and transparent online auctions that serve businesses nationwide.
